MORE MOVING IN MATHS!

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Zia and George who moved up a Strategy Stage in Maths today!  We are super proud of you both!

PLANTING OUR POTS

Today we planted some pots for Mrs Peck.  We had strict criteria that we had to stick to when we decided what plants to put in.  After a lot of investigating we decided to plant Polyanthas and Pansies.  Here is the process we went through...

First we cut the weed mat
Then we put it in the bottom of the pot over the drain hole so the dirt won't fall out and bugs can't get in

Next we add stones on the bottom to help with drainage

We put in some potting mix up to the 2/3 mark

We needed to loosen the roots so the plant doesn't become root-bound

Place the plants carefully in the pot and push the soil around them

Put more plants in to fill up the pot

Ask someone super strong to lift the pots outside - thanks Ben's Dad!

Arrange the pot so it looks good

Smile for the camera!   Well done Piako 2!

Measurement Fun!

This week we have started learning about Measurement in Maths. Today the Year Two children had lots of fun using Mathematical thinking to decide who had the heaviest school bag.

Group One ordering their bags from lightest to heaviest

All of us lined up with our bags ordered from lightest to heaviest!

Matthew, Darian, Saul, and Cameron working hard to accurately order their bags!

WHEN TWO VOWELS GO WALKING SONG!

Check out our new song for Phonics!  We love it, but it gets stuck in Mrs Lunn's head ALL day long!

DOUBLES, DOUBLES!

What a huge difference knowing our 'Doubles' makes.  We are learning all about Multiplication and Division at the moment.  The children who know their 'Doubles' (ie 1+1, 2+2 etc) effectively know their two times table.

They can not only solve mulitplication equations involving the 2 times tables but they can easily divide a number by two as well.

Here are a couple of 'Doubles' songs you might like to let us practise at home...

Constable AJ came to visit!

On Wednesday Constable AJ came to visit all the kids in Piako 2, to talk to us about keeping ourselves safe.

He told us all about the difference between secrets (things that make you feel yuck) and surprises (things that are good and make people feel happy).  He also talked about good touches (like hugs and kisses goodnight), bad touches (kicking and biting etc) and confusing touches (ones that make us feel confused or unsafe).

He told us what to do if we feel unsure or unsafe about a situation.  We did a few role plays so that we could practise what to do.  We talked a lot about who we could ask for help if we needed it.  Miss Crowther and Constable AJ were very proud of us because we know what is right and what is wrong!

Constable AJ had us hanging on every word

Here we are practising saying "NO! Stop it I don't like it!"

Constable AJ told us to remember PANTS.  Here's what it means...

NOTE FROM MISS CROWTHER:

Dear Parents,
This was a very positive and empowering session for your children.  Constable AJ reassured the children that they might not ever need to use what they learnt today, but that it was good to know what to do just in case, they or a friend needed help.  You might like to talk with your child about what AJ talked to them about and reassure them that you as a family and the teachers at school will ALWAYS help them if and when they need us.

Thanks for your on-going support

Christina

Maths Workshops!

Over the last couple weeks, Mrs Lunn has been teaching us Multiplication.  We have been learning how to write multiplication equations but more importantly... what they actually mean!

Here are a few photos to show you what we have been up to in Maths:

Here's Cate, George and Isabel working out how may bears there are!

Bailey and Darian sharing their 'Array-nbows' worksheet

Cam, Max and Matty deep in thought using arrays to show multiplication

There are lots of ways to help us at home:

  • We could practice skip counting in 2s (ie 2,4,6,8,10 etc)
  • Then we could try skip counting in 5s and 10s
  • And if we get super clever, we can try skip counting in 3s, 4s (That's learning our times tables without even knowing it!)
You could always ask us questions while doing chores around the house like
  • Counting the socks in their pairs to see how many there are all together
  • Skip counting the number of forks and knives at the table etc
And when we get REALLY good, you could ask us some multiplication basic facts like 2x5 (the x means lots of/groups)
The faster we know these basic facts, the better mathematicians we will be for the rest of our lives! Yay!

Our Assembly!

On Thursday we hosted the school Assembly. We got to wear the beautiful flowers we made in art, we looked pretty cool! We also showed off our knowledge about plants and everyone (including Mrs Peck) thought we were very clever! Despite some technical difficulties with the microphone we did SO well and made our teachers and parents extremely proud!!

Mahunga, Pakihiwi, Puku, Hope, Wae Wae...

While some of us are at Te Puawai on Monday the rest of us go to LC 1 to learn about Maori with Mrs Burgess & Miss Crowther. We sing lots of waiata and can name nearly all of the colours in Maori! This week we worked on the names of our body parts, check out our great work!

You could even ask us to sing the song at home for you, we all sing it so well!

MATHEMATICIANS OF THE DAY!

Check out these three amazing Mathematicians!  They all moved up a workshop and we couldn't be prouder!

Way to go Sephia, Max and Dylan!
